I'm curious who's taking these photos? Why do they always show provocative images of Lao girls? What does this accomplish? I see a set back not pride.

JACKSPADE, Our photographers. The girl is on show in a public shopping centre, so it's not meant to be provocative.

The photographers have no morals or shame whatsoever taking these photos with 5-10 year old kids in the background. Is zooming into her assets really necessary? This is the kind of behavior I see that will continue to tarnish our culture/tradition present and future. Thailand and the West are laughing at us right this moment, because, this is the best our country has to offer in disregards to our culture/tradition. I'm very disappointed.

I remember a while back, i had few instances, where our own people started speaking Thai to me instead our native language. This one lady kept rambling on in Thai, I had to politely ask her to stop and speak our native language. I guess I was irritated and annoyed by it.

In Thai airport as well, some Thai employees have similar problems. My parents spoke Thai to them to get information they respond back in broken English...my parents politely ask them to speak Thai, but, they kept responding back in English. What the hell's that about? Half of the things these 3 employees were saying I didn't even understand. We literally had to respond back in English (saying we don't understand you please speak Thai). We finally got a response in Thai. What a waste of valuable time just trying to communicate.

I don't know if this ever happen to any of you. It seems crap like this tend to happen to me. :(

Hi JACKSPADE

I think Laos is inference by Thai a lot, because our boarder so close and  most of the Thing we used is import it from Thailand.
Younger generation will be always want to be different and the hormone will always make them want to do the opposite to the parent wants.

About Laos want to talk to you in Thai,I guess because they dress differently to the Local and you are not white. The probably think you are Thai. In case you don't know. Laotian is still a very consider and polite culture. I guess they just being polite to speak to you in Thai.

I had lived and work in Thailand for 12 months about 20 years ago. I know Thai people is rank second the most tricky people in South-East Asia.(Philippine 1st)in my book. I guess the reason they speak to you in English, because your parent is from North of Laos, most of the Laos from North have a very strong accent, when speak in Thai.

JACKSPADE - I had a similar experienced in Laos..  I was out shopping with my cousin at the Morning Market "Talard Xaow", it was a hot day and didn't feel like follow her around.  I've told her I'll wait for her around food vendors and want to have a nice cold beerlao.  Trying not to be rude, I'd stand there patiently til she is done serving other customers.  Afterward she didn't even ask if I needed anything from her little shop and walked to the back to take her break.  I was like... euy.. euy.. jao kai beer yu bor??  Her eyes got big.. :D and said.. kor tode der deal va jao man "yi poun"(japanese) hahahaha I was laughing out loud so hard and told her.. ga khon lao nee la..

Tee, I understand what you are saying, but, our language should always be a priority since they are living in the homeland. In other words, speak your language first, if that doesn't work try Thai or other languages. You cannot make assumptions. I notice Lao people have bad habits doing just that. Let's use my mom for example. She assumed this guy was Chinese, she started talking crap about him, he responded back in Lao...boy oh boy, was she embarrassed. She deserved it.

As for the Thailand airport situation, i think the employees were ask to speak English mainly to learn as much as they can when communicating with tourists. I could be wrong there. But, Thai language is not hard to understand, same thing when we talk to them in our language. They could of spoken Thai back if they wanted to but they chose not to that is my point.

Buk IIWJ, people make too many assumptions.

Regarding language, When Thai tourists visit Laos, we are expected to speak Thai to them. And when Lao tourists visit their country, we are also expected to speak Thai to them.

Laos shuld be using in the Laos for day to day use in Laos. but if we want Laos to be able to advance. we have to learn other languages. the whole world only about 28million(Include Isaan,Thailand) people who can speak Lao. Probabley only 7 million can read and write.  I don't know about you, Can you read and write Laos?

Regretfully, I cannot read or write Lao. I can only speak and understand it. I'm still in the process of learning. It will be another 1-2 years before I get the writing down.

It's wouldn't take you that long to learn, because you already know how to speak!  Laos is a lot easy to learn that Thai. I am learning how to type in Laos soon. I'm waiting for my Laos key board to arrive. I guess would take a while to learn. there are too many keys... Maybe Admin can suggest to me how to get a software "learning how to type in Laos"

Actually, the Sao Lao in the US is far worse. They use you and then lose you in the end. The Vows don't mean anything here.

How come so many ppls I knew that flew all the way to Laos and get marry and brought their spouses over to US and than about 3-4 yrs and in some cases are less than a year and there she goes gone with one of their friends or strangers. Sad story but true :'(. Don't get me wrong cuz I have observed dozens of girls that their relatives or cousins brought them over here by fake marriage. They can out drinks me, they can out parties me and later they all just get knocked out in totally random ppls cars or ppls houses living room. Thavarda knows what happened to them. Lucky I'm not the type to take an advantage of sleeping beauty or drunken knocked out beauty. but many ppls I knew they ain't going to let that slip by cuz they have invested alcohols and beers on them..lol...
Yeah sao Lao over here they party like wild animal too but in smart way. They always have that one ugly fat friend or gay friend look after them. The one no one wants to invest any beers/Henny or have anything to do with. you know ;D

I know I have posted this before somewhere in the forum. If you want to get married remain in Laos. Don't bring them over, if you do that's exactly what will happen. These girls overwhelm themselves with freedom and opportunity, they can careless about you. They get their green card (citizenship) you are pretty much out of the picture. I know a few that's actually loyal to their husband. But, that's a very small fraction.

Girls in America are very cunning. They will drain you dry. You get married, have kids, they divorce you for whatever reasons. Whether or not it's your fault, it's 50/50 or the women gets nearly everything. You have to remember the divorce court usually favor women in the states. The person with the most income has to pay for both attorneys, alimony, and child support (usually). It all boils down to who the judge is man/woman. That is why you see many homicides, etc...because of the failed system. Women here are ruthless.

That is fukd up, man! Why do Lao always try to impress Thai? Thai couldn't care less about Lao! Ever hear a conversation between Lao and Thai strangers? 99% of the time, The Lao will bow down to the Thai and use speak theirs to convey their thoughts. Why? There are enough cognates for both to get a notion of how a conversaition is progressing, right? It always pisses me off when that happens. It's like those Lao have no pride! Lao speak Thai to Thai because most or all Lao can speak an understand Thai. Our language and culture are very similar. When I went to Thai airport as a kids. The staff try to speak Lao to me. I was thinking to myself I can understand you when you speak Thai. " Lao/Thai is ban ai moung nong."

I know Thais who have lived in Vientiane for many years. I speak Lao to them and they speak Thai back to me, we obviously understand each other but we prefer to speak in our native language.

You just have to accept who they are, and there's no harm done.

I'm glad YOU have pride in your culture and are not taking a knee for them. ;) You did say that when Thai tourists cross the river for a visit, that the government EXPECTS it's citizens to do just that, right? Such expectations just sound too absurd to me! Like you just said, they have NO problems comprehending. I was only talking about the Lao - usually the older ones - that I know of. The younger generation couldn't care less. Responses are either gonna be in Lao or English, as far as we're concerned. No Thai! I have never, ever, met a Thai that actually tried to speak Lao. Even if they're familiar with Lao. Again, I'm just speaking about my own experiences!

That's very true. It's rare to find a Thai person who tried to speak Lao. You can hear Thai tourists yakking in Thai language with the vendors on the streets of Laos when you pass by.

Westerners lack Lao language skills when they visit Laos, but at least they try their best to speak Lao.

Thais probably feel more comfortable speaking in their own language, which is not a problem. Again, accept them as they are.

Finally!

BUK HAA LARB DIP is right!

Do I get a hug?

It's fine when spoken informally. But when in a formal situation, they need to show some respect and at least attemp our mother tongue. It's not too much of a burden, is it? I'm sure this is is expected in every other country in the world let alone theirs.
