Yes. They are at the National Assembly Hall in Vientiane.

Dr. Khampheuy Panmalaythong is a newly-elected member of the National Assembly (parliament).

This is one of the better stories from Laos to hear and see a gov't official brainstorming his ideas/thoughts which can better for the country and to be shown to the world.  I thought any Lao gov't gathering is 'closed door'? This is unprecedented is it not to show this to the world?

The meetings of the National Assembly are now televised and a hotline to the Assembly has been set up so that citizens can ask questions and voice complaints.

He doesn't have my vote as the next President of Laos because he is too soft.

This is all fun and games in parliament, Hollywood style, just to show the world that we are heading in the right direction.

What he needs to do is to talk with some aggression. Be specific on who is the root of the problem and don't talk casually. Start pointing finger at people, mention some names for a start. Example "I have issues with you Mr. President and Mr. Prime Minister". I want to hear him say that.

It seems pretty obvious that he is careful with his speech so that he doesn't offend those in the top level, that's the message I'm getting from this "nothing" speech.

Well, you have to realize he's using caution for safety reasons. if you ticked off the wrong person, you could as well be missing or your family members. Remember in the US you can ridicule or criticize a president. In Laos, it's a whole different story. Regardless if he's aggressive or not the question remains, is he getting his ideas through to some of these other politicians? He's open minded and honest, that's what we need for leadership. If you are not going to vote for him, then I guess change is not in your best interest.

Look at the US politics right now, the majority of the population are supporting the same people over and over again. You might have heard of Ron Paul. He's probably the only honest politician. He speaks the truth and very aggressive about it. Other politicians, people in general, and media treat him differently (insane). Everyone always complain about this about that, but when they see something good (truth or honesty) right in front of them they choose to ignore it. Don't fall into the sheep herd.

Exactly, that's why his speech doesn't mean anything. It's just fun and games because he is talking without any conviction and seriousness of the matter.

The other politicians are just sitting there so quiet you can hear a pin drop, there's no response from anyone so how do we know if people agree or disagree with him?

In other countries, the politicians are always at each other's throats, yelling and screaming at each other. That's what we need in Laos. If you are too nice, you're not my ideal leader. I want a tough leader, but at the same time a leader who accepts criticisms.

Other countries have different government structure that allows criticism, you can't compare.  The problem with Lao is, it's limited.  One party system, everyone's afraid of each other, no one's willing to take a stand.  I don't know much about Dr. Khampheuy Panmalaythong maybe you can enlighten me and others in regards to his background.  I'd like to know more about him.

If what you say is true about his lack of seriousness (fun and games) then what's the point of him presenting his ideas?  What exactly is his agenda?

Other politicians are sitting quietly listening without interruptions that's good right?  At least he got his point across, hoping it'll sink into their head. He knows the world is changing fast, Lao is going to be left behind if old ideology is still in placed.  In my opinion, Lao people right now are like slaves (sheep) to the system.  Many are living their lives in hardship and that's all they will ever know if nothing is going to change.

We need more politicians like Dr. Khampheuy Panmalaythong who is honest and speak the truth. For Laos to move forward and modernized the system need to be change. Laos education system, health care, economy is not very good.

He got other parliament attention and thinking. We need more Lao politicians to speak up because Lao citizens has no say.

They say "speak softly and carry a big stick."

What ideas did he present? The things he said is nothing new to everyone in that room. He wants to say more than that, but obviously there's no freedom of speech to allow him to do so.

It's just a general talk similar to listening to a Buddhist Monk tell a story. He didn't mention any names, and he refrained from accusing anyone. His speech made me fall asleep.

I don't want to see any physical fighting in Lao politics, but I do want to see verbal fighting.

I also want to see politicians be specific about the problem, what man or woman in Government is causing the problem. Give them the freedom to name them and accuse them without going to jail, that's what politicians in developed countries do.

I'm sure what you say is true about it being just general talk and nothing new. However, he has nothing to gain by addressing it repeatedly, right?  In my perspective view, this is what I see "We need to wake up, the time for change is now. If we keep following the same path we'll never achieve anything, and the country would still be treated as the bottom feeders of the world." It's not aggressive like you wanted but, the message is pretty clear.

Speaking of change it's happening as we speak. It started with opening doors to tourism, outside businesses.  Now you may have noticed the government is trying to change their policy and bring expatriates home to build businesses, educate,etc...It's a start.  I promise you in the future, you and everyone in the country will have freedom of speech.  Right now, it's just a slow process.

Could someone here translate some of his key points into English?

Well, they're supposed to support him. It's a one-party system and members of the party have to support each other, otherwise they are shown the door.

Around the world is no different in multi-party systems. Members of a political party are considered friends. If they have issues with each other, it stays behind closed doors. The only enemy is the opposition party.

The former Prime Minister of Laos stated that he resigned due to family problems. Don't insult our intelligence, we all know it's more than that.

They should supported Dr. Khampheuy Panmalaythong. He is right and know what he is talking about. Sometime in America Democrats, Republican Party don't supported each other.

I like former PM Bouasone Bouphavanh. He did a great jobs? Didn't they also kick him out of Politburo?

Sounds like that guy is proposing for the Commies to loosen their stranglehold on education, giving more 'power' to Laos' ministry of education.

Is it true the Commies dictate Lao curriculum?

Is it also true classes in Laos aren't taught by proper qualified subject teachers?

They don't have periods in Laos? Are students required to just sit in the same classroom all day with the same teacher who is supposed to know-it-all?

That must be the reason for these kids' disinterest:

Govt reiterates stance on global Lao family

The government has reaffirmed its policy to facilitate the return of people of Lao origin living abroad so they can contribute their expertise and experience, as well as finances, to the development of their birth nation.

Dr Thongloun Sisoulith chairs the meeting in Vientiane on Wednesday.
Government officials met in Vientiane yesterday to review the past six months' implementation of activities related to people of Lao origin living abroad and set plans for the next six months.

Chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Thongloun Sisoulith, the meeting also discussed a draft strategic plan for 2011-15 to facilitate the return of overseas ethnic Lao so they can take part in development activities.

The meeting agreed to propose that the government considers setting up specific policies related to border crossings, visits to relatives in Laos, land rights and marriage, as they relate to returning overseas ethnic Lao.

The government will soon issue a decree related to permanent residency in Laos for this group in an effort to encourage more people to return.

Dr Thongloun expressed appreciation to the relevant officials for their efforts in ensuring that overseas ethnic Lao have a better understanding of the reality of the development process, and the role and reputation of Laos in the regional and international arenas.

He said strengthening relations with people of Lao origin living abroad was very important at the present time and urged the relevant sectors to bolster their collaboration and cooperation to realise the country's five-year development strategy.

The Party's policy states that it regards overseas ethnic Lao as members of the national family and welcomes those who want to come back to work with Lao citizens towards the development of the country.

Last year, some 200 overseas ethnic Lao were invited to attend the celebration to mark the 450th anniversary of Vientiane as the capital, and many expressed pride after witnessing the positive changes in the country over the past 35 years.

An estimated 700,000 people of Lao origin now live abroad, mostly in the United States, Canada, France, Australia and New Zealand. Many of them left Laos after 1975.

About 80 percent of them are citizens of the country in which they now live.

Try to visited Laos first. Most of the people, Lao expats that visited Laos feel in love with the country and culture. I don't think there is any problem if you visited or open business in Laos. Government try to developed the country and welcome tourism, investment.

I can't log LP on my iphone anymore. I can only log on when I'm at home. I'm still here but at the gym and at work most of the time. I go to the gym at 12pm-3pm and work 4pm-2am.

How are you doing?
;) :D
