God bless you Old Man. Thank you so much for teaching Lao kids English. How much do you charge per month? If any. I think showing them English movie or cartoon is also a good way to learn.
:) :)

Old Man, It's very kind and thoughtful of you to teach English to young kids in Laos, and I'm sure they feel appreciative with the work you do to help them learn some valuable English.

Lao Democratic, Yes, I remember watching The Wizard of Oz all the time when I was little, I guess that helped.

I'm semi-retired now, so I teach these village kids for free.  It would be very difficult for their parents to come up with the money to pay me a salary like I used to get working for NGOs in Vientiane.

You're kind at heart and caring. You wouldn't find many ethnic Lao people in Laos who would be willing to teach anything for free.

Your valuable lessons will help them grow and develop their language skills, and we all know that English is a very important language in the world.

I want to do something like that when I retire in Laos. Volunteer and charity work. I'm lucky and bless to have opportunity in America. But I know what's like growing up in Laos.

Larb Dip, I think the sentence is self explanatory.

Lao Democratic, When you retire, you will still have money, that's why you can work for free. It's definately different for the locals in Laos.

Man if we have some more good people like Oldman, Laos would be better and brighter place for kids that have no hope or school. May I ask where this village located? So I could tell my people to go make some school supplies donations for me and perhaps few sets of computer to assist you. I will pay for it. Real talk

Thanks for the very kind thoughts.

The village is located in a rural area 30 km. outside Vientiane.  There is a bi-lingual, printable map on the website:]www.rivertimelaos.com

About computers for schoolchildren: there is an organisation called 'One laptop per child' in the U.S. www.laptop.org/ that produces attractive, cheap, durable laptops for children in poor rural areas in developing countries.  The laptops can run by wind-up clockwork without needing electricity.

If you are visiting Laos, or are able to send supplies by post, the best things to bring or send are, pencils, pens, notebooks, rulers, crayons, erasers, etc. Also sports equipment (deflated footballs, and the like).  Bringing or sending books is not a good idea as they are so heavy (therefore expensive) and most are not suitable for Lao children.  Suitable books for Lao children can be bought in the markets and shops in Vientiane and then taken to the villages/schools.  If you contact Barnaby at Rivertime (in the first link) he can help you with that.

There is also an organisation that helps travelers on holiday take supplies to children in rural areas.  It is:

Their website is: http://www.packforapurpose.org/

Have a look at the links.

Regards,

Old Man

Oh, I see you live in Boston, Laosport.

Then you are near M.I.T. They are the ones behind the One Laptop Per Child project.

For packforapurpose.org. Do you pack all those supply yourself when you visit Laos or the organized can send them for you?

Yes hopefully I have some money later when I retire. I'm working hard now. I want to retire early 55-60 yrs old. If we retire in the US we might have to work till 70 yrs old later, and cost of living is higher here.

Not as such.  i.e. not an office, etc. But anyone can buy laptops and donate them personally.

Sure.  But if you are thinking of sending English language DVDs, try to pick some that are child-based and, if possible, use simple language.

Any other kind of school supplies would be most welcome by the children and teachers in the three village schools around here.

It can run off a mains electricity supply too.  The crank handle is used to generate clockwork energy to power up the batteries so it can be used in remote rural areas which have no electricity.

It is cool, isn't it?......  :)

Thanks for your kind and generous words Administrator.

I wrote this series of 12 graded, illustrated, bi-lingual readers especially for Lao children and use to them to teach these children.  I illustrated the first 5 books myself before hiring a professional Lao illustrator and layout specialist.

MrLao4ever to help Lao student. You can talk to Old Man and send him school supply. He also donated them to surround school in other village. I will send a box of school supply sometime this week. I found great deal at Wal-Mart for one pack of 76 pencil it cost only $4. I'll get at least 5 pack = 380 pencils and other school supply too.

How about another option?  Perhaps you can create a Paypal account so we can send the donation to you directly?  The money you receive you can purchase the item there.  Wouldn't that be easier and cheaper?  I have been using Paypal for years and they are very reliable, and convenient.  I know there's Western Union and Money Gram but, they too are expensive.

Thanks.  I had Books 10 and 11 in the series translated into the Lao language and a Japanese NGO paid to print thousands of copies of them which a Lao children's charity (Action with Lao Children) then sent to every secondary school in Laos.

I even got interviewed on TV about one of the books (about Evolution).  I think 6 or seven people may have seen the TV program - seems like nearly everyone here prefers to watch Thai TV.

Here are the two books that were sent to the schools.

How IS your pasa Lao, by the way. 20 years must be long enough.

Laos just needs to be more creative and come up with the goods when it comes to entertainment. Otherwise it's back to those Siamese lakorns. I remember when I was there, they used to have people perform in front of a bluescreen. Not an authentic experience, if you know what I mean.

I was probably being unkind to Lao TV - they've improved it a lot in recent years.

You're kind at heart and caring. You wouldn't find many ethnic Lao people in Laos who would be willing to teach anything for free.

Your valuable lessons will help them grow and develop their language skills, and we all know that English is a very important language in the world.

Thanks for your kind and generous words Administrator.

I wrote this series of 12 graded, illustrated, bi-lingual readers especially for Lao children and use to them to teach these children.  I illustrated the first 5 books myself before hiring a professional Lao illustrator and layout specialist.

That is the smae question I wanted to ask to - Would it be better to send money and you all can purchase them over there?  I think it would be more feasible.

Old Man thank for the link. Does they have "One laptop per child" in Laos?

Not as such.  i.e. not an office, etc. But anyone can buy laptops and donate them personally.

For packforapurpose.org. Do you pack all those supply yourself when you visit Laos or the organized can send them for you?
:)

If you wanted to send them, you could post them to me at:

Old Man,
Rivertime Ecolodge

Or contact Barnaby at the ecolodge through their website for more info. and details.

Good idea Jackspade.  I'll see if I can set one up.

I think it's better to send money and buy them over there. Don't have to pay shipping fee. It only cost $10 for money gram to send money and they can pick it up in Laos in 10 minute at any bank.  You can also ask Old Man. I'll find out about shipping fee tomorrow and let you know.

It cost about $30-$60 for shipping. Depend on the size of the box and weight. I think it's better and cheaper just to send money gram. They can buy school supply in Laos. It only cost $10 and no hassle.

Lao Democratic, how much would it cost to send all these that you are getting over there? I have not done this before.  I do not worry about the cost but wanted to have an idea so I can get more supplies as much as possible.

Seems too easy.

When we have the number and give it to the bank, what does the bank then do?

After all, you said "go into any bank" so the moneygram is not sent to a SPECIFIC bank.  Where is it sent to?

Banks here are often not that up to date with new technology and I worry that they won't know what to do with that number.

If you give the number to the bank and tell them your name. At any bank they'll know. They has the record in their computer. I send money to relative in Vientiane all the time. Very easy. Old Man just try to go to any bank by your house.

Lao Democratic I agree.  Less hassle for us.  PLus these supplies are relatively less expensive over there and they should be able to get more supplies.

I just talk to Old Man. I think he prefer a box of school supply. Its easy for him and he don't have to spend time, and gas to get all the stuff in Laos. Easy for us to get supply in the US and ship them. I live by Target, post office and Wal-mart store.

You can ask Old Man. Leave him personal message. He give me the address, but we should ask him first. For under $100 = 810,000 Kip or less you can get a lot of school supply. About $30 for shipping is not a big deal and will take about 6-8 day for shipping.

I has alway thinking about donating school supply to Lao kids. Another good way is pack all those school supply in your suit case when you get a an opportunity to visit Laos.
