Ice cream men on three wheel bicycles make homemade ice creams and they sell them independently.

These ice creams tends to be cheaper than ice creams made from a company, and they are usually not very cleanly made.

So for cleanliness and better taste, always look for the Wall's ice cream men in red when buying ice creams in Laos.

Can you post a picture of Wall's Ice-cream men so I will be able to readily recognize it?

Authentic ice creams cost around $1. Cornetto ice creams are nice.

Admin,

I'm surprised that you would encourage company-made ice cream rather than supporting independent locals. No doubt that the prior would be cleaner and taste better, but that doesn't seem like something you would say. haha  ;)

As for the girl with too much make up, are those cones actually $1? Thats how much an equivalent ice cream would cost here, but I assumed that it would have been somewhat cheaper in Laos.

Title: Re: Ice cream man in Vientiane
Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 13th Apr, 2011 at 2:22am
The independent locals will still make many sales, regardless of what I say on here.   ;)

Cornetto cones are just under $1 US. They're expensive than the coconut flavoured homemade ice creams that sell for around 40 US cents.

Company ice creams are expensive to cover their import and electricity expenses, and obviously they need to make some profit from each sale.

What does Galaam mean?

Is it a ice block, ice cream, or something or other?

It doesn't even sound Lao. Perhaps it's a loan word. French, maybe?

Title: Re: Ice cream man in Vientiane

Galaam mean ice-cream.
:P

Is it a loan word? Perhaps Pali or Sanskrit, because it doesn't sound Lao? One too many syllables. ;D

It's a French word.

We tend to create funny words from English/French words.

"Motorsai" for motorcycle, "Jing jo" for kangaroo, for example.

'Motorsai' is Thai. In Laos we say, 'Lot juck'.

I didn't know we have kangaroos in Laos. ;D

We don't have kangaroos in Laos, we just call them that way.

Lao people invariably shorten and simplify words, including foreign and hybrid words.

ice cream

cream

caleam

karaam

or with the transilteration above -

galaam

Yes seaw you do keep editing my 'freedom of speech'. ;D

I have been sure to omit the vowel when typing certain four-letter curses, but still you replace them with such puns as: 'crappity smacked', 'nuts', 'thingy' etc. ;D Here's my favourite: 'women'. ;D For all it's worth, I think it's cute. :-* ;)

There are legitimate words that you, too, have 'edited' nang. Such as: 'heroine'.

Let's not forget now seaw.

Why would you have a problem with Larb Dip? We have been flirting for the last month or so, right? You might as well connive your phone number like you did with your age right now. I'll pick you up in my bicycle. I'll take you to all the places YOU wan't to go to.
If it wasn't for my caste which you are holding against me, I would have courted you and made you my woman already.

Don't mind me nang, I'm only scribbling now and am having a little fun. I have a recurring migraine, debris from last nights excessive drinking sessions. I am constantly slipping in and out of consciousness. All that fog outside only compounds the melancholy. He doesn't need gloves. He is using a spoon to scoop the ice cream into a plastic cup. You can see the white plastic cups in the picture.

Most people don't use gloves in Laos, including chefs in the restaurants. It's probably best to avoid Laos, if gloves is a big issue.

I already mentioned the price on the first page.

When I retire in Laos I'm taking a cook with me, among other necessities.

By the way, do they have servants - or as we say, khon say - or does that mean 'slave'? - for hire in Laos? Someone who is willing to stay on the premises, whose sole job is to keep the house in a tidy state?

Larb Dip, Don't be silly, he is not touching anything that customers will be eating. And this cleanliness talk is coming from a person who likes to eat raw meat which is full of bacteria.

You can hire servants in Laos. Calling them "khon sai" tends to put them down. These days we call them "mae baan".

It's outdated and offensive. You are now required to call servants "mae baan".

ince when did khon say start becoming offensive? I still hear the old timers refer to such people as 'khon say' when they appear in a movie.

Labourers make more than office workers. It's like that in your country as well.

No it's not like that! People pay tens of thousands of dollars just to gain a qualification. All that training and spending is justified by the high income one earns after acquiring such skills. All labourers do are the petty jobs that the builders/plumbers/ etc. look upon with disdain. Sweeping floors, moving material up 5 floors at a time etc. Trust me, I know! Most are desperate and uneducated and need the job.

This false belief must be why our 'sisters' in Laos keep getting duped into crossing the river and end up as sex slaves. :'(

Are you saying labourers in Laos make more than you?

Learning is different to having an actual business.

You need to be smart and have startup funds if you want to make "real" money, otherwise all you can do is make a few dollars a day selling ice-creams.

That's true. It's easy saids then done. Most people want to open business but few will make it. You can make very good money or go broke. You have to know what you're doing and has money for back up. Some people are born into business. Their family teach them the trick of the trade.

How long did it take to finish that business course?

LaoCowboy, You don't need to be living in the USA to be into Judy Garland. Just like many people living outside the USA are into Michael Jackson.

Even though I live in Laos, I grew up admiring her talents and she is definately someone I look up to in my life. I hope to be living in America one day, or even visit because I know people there, and one of our photographer is based in New York.

He took some "Osama Bin Laden is dead" celebration pictures, all exclusive to Lao Pride.

A sponsor can help, or if you work for an American-based company in Laos, it makes it a bit easier to visit because you have connections.

As for living in America, you probably need to have a legitimate reason to be there to work, or marriage to an American citizen will open the door for you.

I read somewhere - on here, or one of it's sister 'sites - qualifications in Laos aren't internationally recognised. Outside of Laos, that means that peice of paper with your name stamped on the dotted line, is just that: paper.

Did I just blow the flame out of your emigration aspirations?

True, but I'm referring to qualifications that are recognised for jobs in Laos.

If I happen to move abroad in the near future, I'm happy to start in basic jobs that doesn't require high qualifications, and work my way up.

Are your 'connections' a part of your plan? Or are you banking on a prince charming to come along and save you from your misery? Are you planning on leaving as a trophy wife? It sounds like it. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, it makes perfect sense now: you enigmatically remaining a bachelorette - is that your portrait, by the way? - looking the way you do! Did I just crack your plan?

LaoCowboy, The Lao government help out financially with scholarship and student exchange programs, but it's not much, so coming from a wealthy family background will certainly make your life and study abroad better.

The two universities that I had attended, I knew many foreign students that came from Vietnam, Nigeria and South Korea and they all got full scholarships, research assistant or teaching assistant and the universiities pay them monthly stipends to fully cover tuitions, living expenses and books/supplies.  I do not think their home countries paid them anything to come over to the US.

LIke I said previously I hope more and more Lao students will get these opportunities, like students from other countries, to come to the US for higher education (almost free) becuase the US-Laos relation is getting better as we are speaking ;).

Do they still sell ice cream with sticky rice?  I remembered when I was little boy living in Laos they had ice cream and sticky rice in a same bowl.  It was delicious way before you were born lolz.....just wondering  ;)

I haven't seen any, but sticky rice has a natural sweetness and it can be used in all kinds of desserts, so with ice cream would be okay.

No they don't. They use banana leaves, which is called "bai dong."
