Was Don Chan Palace named after someone? I'd rather stay at a small resort or guest house than a 4/5 star hotel when travelling to places like Laos that have natural beauty. I can stay in a paris hilton hotel where I live any day, I don't need to travel half way around the world to do that. I guess every country needs a lavish hotel to boast about.

I guess those river front properties were very expensive since they didn't have any money left to build a decent house on, but the view was all worth it.

Honest Lao ppl are living in poverty.
The Crooks(Corruptors)are living better than Don Chan Palace.
Govt officers salary is about $80-$100 but they're tend to have the cars cost more than $120,000 plus biger house and lands.
Do you math if you work for 34yrs of salary $100(without eating anything) Can you afford to buy all of those?

No, Don Chan wasn't named after someone.

"Don" in Lao means "island". And "Chan" means "moon".

So if we translate it into English, Don Chan means "Island on moon".

And to answer your question, WantLaosToBeIndependence. Some government staff are given free cars.

In Laos, It does.  New BMW X5 2008 in US $58k but when I shipped it over there they bought it $135k cash.

If you never owe one you never know, won't blamed you for that.

Most people in Laos own little motorbikes and four-wheel drives.

Not many people own luxury cars like BMW's.

I didn't say that Laos didn't have luxury cars.

Only 3% of the Lao population own those sorts of cars you just mentioned.

ADMIN..I may be wrong here..but I think you know the answer: It is estimated that there are just over 6 million people living in Laos?  Again, please correct me if I'm wrong...

So you said "3% of Lao population own those sorts of cars."  If my math is right...180,000 LAOTIANS OWN LUXURY CARS like Benz, BMWs and HUMMERS?

That number seems a bit high don't you think?

No offense to my fellow Lao people....IF YOU HAVE IT~MORE POWER TO YOU!  I just drive a regular Nissan...still gets me from A to B.

I went to Laos in 07' and the week before I left my cousin's husband bought a used (second hand) HUMMER $70,000 ~ CASH!!! I was like..holy CRAP --- CASH!!!  ONLY HUMMER in Pon Hong!..well at least in 07'

>>>

Here's what my nephew and cousin told me when I was in Laos in 07'.  Car ships from USA costs 50k, but MAY sell in Laos for 80-90k.  I'm NOT sure about 130k..?

Reason for high price - TAX!  TAX by Thais, Tax by Laos!

Also, some Laotian visitors RENT from Thailand, luxury cars and drive back to Laos.  I saw a couple when I was there. Actually ran into someone I knew...He and his wife rented a BENZ!

BorLeumBanGerd, Add ordinary sports cars and Vigo to the luxury cars list too and 3% is not high.

Goodmorning Laos and all members / none members,

BMW X5 2008 Brand New. Midnight Blue $59,850 Cash at North Dallas Dealer.
BMW X5 2003 Used. Black $20,000 Cash at Dallas Auto Auction.

The used one the owner over there had sold it for $70,000 Cash.
And a new one the owner want to use it for while then will sell it later.
He said : "Someone had offered him $120,000 cash but he didn't want to sale it yet" ( Fact )

180% Tax for the auto import and its only 1% Tax(one%) if you have the connection( coffee money or tea money )

Believe it or not, I didn't made this up just take my words for it....
Look at the used HUMMER cost $70K and PRADO $75K this one look exactly like the LEXUS GX470 But it's not V8, It's I4.

Most ppl living in Laos they pretend to be " see no evil hear no evil" 3monkeys. They're well educated but dumb; society made them to be that way, I can't blame them.

Don't mind me, drop a line if you disaagree of what I had saying.

I agree with INDEPENDENCE!  HE'S TELLING THE TRUTH and NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH!!

Lao people pay the HIGH PRICE for cars because of the TAX!  I don't know the EXACT % for vehicle taxes, LUXURY, SPORTS..is HIGHER as ADMIN pointed out.

When I came back from Laos in 07', my cousin gave me some books and one of them was an OFFICIAL book on TAX LAWS in LAOS.  Damn book was like 50 pages!

I will review it and try to get quotes of the exact tariff.
