The pride of Laos - Did you know that?

  • The national flower of Laos is the Dok Champa (plumeria).
  • Lao people from our three cities (Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Pakse) speak different accents.
  • The Lao sticky rice can be used to eat with meals or dessert.
  • In Laos, there are three New Year's days in mid April.
  • Laos used to have Kings and Queens for centuries, until the monarchy was abolished in 1975.
  • Lao National Day (2 December) is the anniversary of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, the day it was established.
  • There are more Lao people living outside of Laos, than inside Laos.
  • It is estimated that 90% of lowland Lao people have relatives living in Thailand.
  • More people in the world have heard of a country called "Thailand", than they have heard of a country called "Laos".
  • Laos doesn't have any ocean because the country is surrounded by other Southeast Asian countries.
  • The Mekong River in Laos is known as "Mae nam Khong", which means, the mother of all rivers.
  • The Khone Papeng in Laos is the largest waterfall on the Mekong River and the whole of Southeast Asia.
  • Laos hosted the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in 2009, and the first time in our history.
  • Laos sent an Olympic team to compete in the Summer Olympic Games in Moscow 1980, and the first time in our history.
  • Laos has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, they are Luang Prabang and Wat Phu.
  • There are over 300 giant and intriguing stone jars known as "The Plain of Jars" littering Laos for over 2,000 years.
  • The average life expectancy for a citizen of Laos is 64 years from birth.

Nice Laos stadium picture and thank for the information about Laos. I know about 23 million Lao people live in Thailand, but didn't know that 90% still has relative in Laos. Thailand took Laos territory, Issan in 1904.

If 90% of lowland Lao people have a relative in Thailand, it doesn't mean that 90% of people in Thailand have a relative in Laos. There's a difference.   ::)

USA Joe, Sadly, it is true. The population of Laos is under 7 million. If we combine every Lao person in Thailand, USA, Canada, Europe and Oceania, there's more than what we have in Laos at the present time.

Because of politics. Laos is behind because we're alway under foreigner power control for century. We were under Thailand,French and now Vietnam. We are exploit by our powerful neighbor. But in 21th century Laos has potential for growth. Laos is th second fastest growing in Asia with 7.7% behind. China. As Laos economy boom so will the population. When Laos is wealthy and develop everybody will want to move there. In 10-20 year keep your eye on Laos. Laos is coming up.

Thailand is wealthy and developed because they never been colonize, plus they're supported by US and EU. Now US back Vietnam,Laos and Combodian. It's humane nature people follow jobs and opportunity. Nobody want to be poor.

I think regardless of where we are, most of us are proud to be Lao.  I always cheer when I see the few Lao athletes that compete in the summer olympic games.

Lao Lan Xang, That means there's around 25 million Laotians in foreign countries, and around 5 million Laotians in Laos (excluding the ethnic minorities, Vietnamese, Chinese, westerners and others with no Lao ethnic roots).

It's obvious that we are losing our people, which is probably one of the reasons why the Lao government is encouraging Lao people from abroad to come back to live and work in Laos. I can't think of another country that has more of its people living in foreign soil, so that's something to observe.

Iluvstickyrice, It's good that you still cheer the Lao athletes at the summer games. Maybe one day Laos will win its first olympic medal, we will be happy with bronze.

Great idea. I give government credit for trying encouraging Lao oversea to move back and live in Laos, and improve policy. Laos will become a democracy states in the future. Then more and more people will move to Laos for sure.

Longhang, You'd be surprised how many people in Laos are in their 80s and 90s. You're very lucky to still have a great grandma, I don't even have a grandma. I wish her a happy and long life.

i guess it is easier to blame other countries for your own situation. last i checked, the lao government was run by lao people, not vietnamese. u may point finger at politics but is your own politics that hold you back.

that is why laotian rather live away from lao.

Laos and Cambodia government are control by Vietnam after 1975. Vietnam put Hun Sen government in power in Cambodia and LPDR in Laos.

Ah USA Joe let me control your family future, let me tell them how to eat, sleep,
let control your money and everything you
do. You are not allow to go to good school
or get good paying jobs, and in the next
10-20 year let see how well your family will do under my control. Who will you blame then for lack of jobs and opportunity?

Over 22 million Lao in Issan are under Bangkok rule for hundred year. Issan is still the poorest region in Thailand. Some are rich but many has to work as cheap labors, and in sex industry to survive. Issan are helping build Thailand economy instead of Laos.

there will always be some sort of government in control. rather you agree with their reign or not. i know u passionately blame vietnam for all lao's underachieving.

but your facts of blaming them is weak. look at what you said:

Quote:
let control your money and everything you do

you saying you are not allowed to earn your own money, spend, save as you wish? we both know you can

Quote:
You are not allow to go to good school
really... so all those universities around lao are fake? and the sponsorship to china/austria/usa for international study are lies according to you.

Quote:
or get good paying jobs
there are many good paying jobs, as evident by the millionaires of lao people living in mansions. its just how you go find them. i know your type. you want everything done for you.  i can see you wanting the government to find you a job. do everything and you just show up. thats fine, but dont expect a good paying job. you get what you look for.

u may try to type the same old fake long vietnam controlling lao story, but at the end of your make-up paragraph, its still you in control of your destiny.

Without Vietnam that mean no Socialist in SE Asia. If US had won Vietnam War. Laos would've become a democracy states and better off. Just like Thailand. As a free states US, EU will help build Laos economy. Yes I blame Viet Cong for most of our problem. Western nation don't supported Socialist. They're helping Laos right now to counter China influence. Why do you think Cuba and North Korea are behind, because of economic sanction by the West.

Laos, Lao people under foreigner power control for century until these day has less opportunity. Lao in Laos are under Vietnam control, Lao in Isan are under Thailand control.

thank you for ignoring all my logical statement and for continuing to post your anti-vietnam propaganda.

you obviously do not want to discuss the fact that you alone can control your own destiny. you rather point the blame on government and everyone else.

lao has more opportunity now than ever. there's jobs. there's education. your points are invalid. there is no big bad vietnam controlling and making lao not grow. its all in your fearful mind.

So what you saying is you got no one to blame except yourself. So Black African American slave should blame themself for being slave. Native American should blame themself for European settlers stealing their land and massacre million and million of their people.

a personal attack directed at me. how mature. call me names all you want, that is a true sign that you are wrong and must resort to lashing out angry. lol.

its ok if u feel u need to blame everyone for all your tragedy. its ok if u decide u want to better yourself too. because at the end, its really just you in control of yourself. not the big bad mean viets. take care kid :D

This is where i will defeat your inaccurate thinking. (1) i said that lao has more opportunity now than ever with education, financial and technology. so at current date, lao has no one else to blame if they choose not to better themselves.

(2) u were the one blaming viets for lao's situation at present and at past and for future. in fact u blame everyone but yourself.

(3) the african-americans and native americans were mistreated in past, but today, they are super rich and have super opportunity. THEY DO NOT HOLD GRUDGE ABOUT CENTURY OLD MISTREATMENT unlike you who continues to hold childish grudge even when Lao is so much better now than before.

(4) the african-americans and native americans did not need white people to leave before they could better themselves, they choose to help themselves and are now living large.

so again, u should stop blaming others.

Yes Laos is under foreign occupation. No need for 75,000 Vietnamese troop in Laos.

"Black and Indian are super." you say. Few are but have you been in the ghetto or Indian reservation lately and ask them.  Unemployment rate is 9.5% but for minority is around 20%.

yes blacks are among the most paid sports figure and rap stars.

yes native americans now have tax-free living and casino benefits.

these two oppressed groups are now better than they are before EVEN though the american people did not leave usa.

they did not get angry and blame white people ONLY. they marched and changed the laws and now are benefiting.

so my suggestion to you again, since u are very slow learner, stop blaming other people and make your own path

Yes Indian got casino, alcohol and reservation. Oh yeah most professional sport player are black, but what percent out of 11 million african  american population is that. Less then 1%, most are not millionaire or billionaire. US is great, but its not perfect. I can go on about great thing and bad thing too. I do understand how Capitalist work.
