Title: Small business in Laos
Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 14th Dec, 2010 at 5:54am
Some families in Laos operate small shops on their property to earn some extra income.

I think open small business in Laos is better then working for somebody else.

Look like someone can easily break into their shop at night.

Yes, but many people don't have enough money to start a business, so they need to work for other people.

They sleep right behind their shop, so if someone break in, they will hear them.

It's would be nice if people can get bank loan, micro loan to open small bussiness. In U.S many Lao family also work full time and do small business on a side to make extra money.

People can get a bank loan in Laos, but only if they are able to pay back.

It's good to know that Lao-Americans are doing well.

Hopefully there will be more jobs, and opportunity in the near future as Laos economies grow.

These types of 'shops' are EVERYWHERE in the ban nork areas. By the way, they ALWAYS pack their goods inside before calling it a day.

They don't pack their goods inside their house at the end of the day.

They just make sure their shop is locked up properly. Some people sleep near their shop.

That a good idea so people don't steal.

Yes, things like that, and everyday household items. Roadside shops don't usually sell ice-creams.

Does gas stations in Vientiane have mini-markets as well?

Title: Re: Small business in Laos

They probably sell some things, but customers don't go inside the petrol/gas service station. Staff are on standby to fill up for customers and collect payments on the spot, so it's usually a quick entry and exit.

Does they take a credit card at the gas station?
:)

Not that I'm aware of. A few of the bigger gas stations maybe accept credit card payments.

This is a dumbfonded question but I thought Laos is warm - hot all year round but I see many pictures with people wearing a jacket, just like the dude with the motorbike.  The weather does get cool/cold in the winter season?

Last time I was there it was freezing at night. Granted, I was in the back of a tuk-tuk. But still, long sleeve tshirt and jeans, and I was shivering.

My estimation is $400,000USD/per station (everything included with mini-market inside).

I'm not sure, but I think you can smaller gas station for cheaper or under $200,000 or way less. One thing about gas station people like to rob them. In the U.S it's one of th most dangerous jobs.
:o :)

Where is the closest refinery to Vientiane? Vietnam or Thailand?

Title: Re: Small business in Laos
Post by MrLao4ever on 4th May, 2011 at 3:37am
Sorry.  My question was where does Vientaine get gasoline from? I am sure we do not have refineries in Laos.

Petrol / gasoline in Vientiane is imported from Thailand.

Laos also imports from Vietnam.

Shell is the only petrol franchise in Vientaine as of right now?
