Human trafficking on the rise in Laos

http://www.asiapacificnews.net/story.php?rid=43634698

VIENTIANE, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Human trafficking is an escalating problem in Laos, due to unemployment, poverty and lack of education opportunities, Lao News Agency (KPL) reported on Wednesday.

The number of Laotians falling victim to human trafficking was reported to increase significantly in 2010, most of whom were poor and lack access to jobs and education.

Most victims were from central and southern Laos, including the capital Vientiane, Savannakhet, Saravane and Champassak provinces that have more communications with neighboring Thailand than other places, said Chiengkham, deputy head of the Police General Department.

Almost 150 victims were repatriated back to Laos from Thailand last year, 119 of them under 18 years old, of whom 109 were female, KPL said.

Thailand is very close to those provinces so it's very easy to get there.

If you're a young girl, planning to travel to Thailand to work and you don't have any relatives there to check on you, then it's very risky. That's all I can say.

If Lao government provide better jobs, and opportunity for young Lao people then they don't have to go to Thailand and become victims of human trafficker. If they work in Laos and get pay $40 a month, but Thai pay $250 they will go to Thailand.

"Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that a son of a mineworkers can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president." Nelson Mandela

"Most poverty resulted from bad governance." George Soros

Still, there's no guarantee that they will be paid $250 a month.

It takes a lot of courage to cross the border, and into the unknown. It's only when they arrive in Thailand that they finally realise it's a bogus job.

Men also become victims, and trick to work as slave on Thai fishing boat with no pay. They might promise $250 a month but you might only get $50 when you're there. There too much risk. It's crazy and sad what human being done to each other.

The world is a crazy place. Extra precautions are now required learning, and somethings we would like to do, sadly, are just too dangerous to even consider.
