What did we have to "surrender" to get this type of "investment"? That is your homework for tonight. All this optimism is too much for me.

I don't know but China need natural resource to feed it giant economy. With railway maybe China can export their goods throughout SE Asia faster. China is all about business and making money.

Good thing new generation of Lao leader bring in China because we don't want to see Laos overrun by Vietnam. China and Vietnam hate each other.

You don't know now, do you?
ALL THIS OPTIMISM IS KILLING ME!
To quote the admin', a "Chinese area", among numerous other things is what it "cost" us for all this "investment". When they built those venues for the SEA games they didn't use Lao labour, now did they? They imported all their own "hands", didn't they? So where does all the money go? It gets funneled back to China. What "investment?"
ALL THIS OPTIMISM IS KILLING ME!

I saw this article in the news too. (I have my Google News send me e-mail about Laos and Vientiane) I thought wow. I hope Laos does make great improvements, but not at the expense of it's natural resources or it's unique culture, etc.

I saw an article about a Vietnam rubber company building 3 factories and rubber tree plantations. Not too sure rubber tree plantations are a good thing.

I wish only good things for Laos and it's people. I am farang born, but my wife says I am Lao in my heart.

Laos need to industrialize and needed more manufacturing. Another problem is these company bring their own worker. I think they're building processing plant for rubber. I don't like rubber tree idea either. Laos can used the land to grow food instead.

Glad I could sway the ambivalence that was in your head to a more realistic pessimistic view. We must always think what their (these "investors") intentions really are. No-one goes out of their way and simply expects nothing in return.
Just so you don't forget what I'm about:" ALL THIS OPTIMISM IS KILLING ME!"
