Of course I will be working Thursday and Friday. Maybe I can talk Keo into going to the party at the Wat in Alvada, Ohio on Saturday, that is if she isn't working that weekend.

I meant this years. Sorry, but I am in a rush, so I don't really have time to proofread my own responses.

Baa tee toh.

Are these really our beloved sao Laos here? This kinky behaviour seems very uncharacteristic of the conservative Lao women stereotype.

I must admit these wet t-shirt snapshorts are turning this pubao on! Paraphernalia I may use as inspiration for a certain for a certain hobby of mine. if you know what I mean. ;D

I'm demanding an encore right now nang!

More. MORE. MORE! Please upload more! :D

The few pictures posted are new from this year. The official day of the Lao New year is the 14th to 16th, but some people start their celebrations early.

Why do you keep dodging the real themes nang?

You must post this years celebrations for us all to see.
By the way, those 'parades' of years gone by don't convey much enthusiam. They're not as convincing as the festivities held across the river. Let's hope this years party is a literal jamboree!

You know Lao New Years is approaching when you see Easter bunnies and easter eggs lining the shelves of your local supermarkets.

Do they celebrate this in Laos?

Any Chocolate eggs or bunnies for sale?

Title: Re: Happy Lao New Year (April 14-16)
Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 10th Apr, 2011 at 1:40am
We don't celebrate Easter in Laos, and there are no chocolate eggs for sale, not at a typical market anyway. You probably have to go to a proper store. I know the mini marts sell chocolates all year round. You can buy real bunnies in Laos.

I was wondering if there will be any water shortage issue during this Peemai in Vientiane when all the fine women of Laos wet themselves ;) ::)?

Title: Re: Happy Lao New Year (April 14-16)
Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 10th Apr, 2011 at 11:04am
Yes, it's the same days every year. Thailand begin their New Year a day earlier than Laos on April 13.

Lao New Year celebrations can start early as we have seen with the case in Sydney, Australia.

In Laos too, celebrations start early, some people still continue partying even after April 16, but you can't throw water on people after April 16.

Here's a spontaneous question:

Will the 'innocent' be exempt from these waterfights? Or is it just a given that if you happened to find yourself in between the crossfiring, you, too, are going to end up doused like everyone else?

Title: Re: Happy Lao New Year (April 14-16)
Post by William Kelley on 10th Apr, 2011 at 10:29pm
I understand that the tradition of splashing or politely pouring water on someone during Lao New Year has been corrupted. Here are a few examples I found on the internet...

He added that many Vientiane residents didn't stick to tradition in splashing water, instead throwing water-filled plastic bags from pick-up trucks, which caused problems. Some people had been injured and the mirrors of 13 vehicles had been broken.

"Now we can see plastic bags along the roads in Vientiane . To avoid this, next year we will have better plans to stop pick-ups carrying tanks and using plastic bags. We will raise awareness directly in the villages to better understand the good traditions of our country," he said.

******************************************************************

No one is safe from marauding gangs armed with water balloons and high-powered water guns. Actually, in Vientiane, there are not so many activities for people to do. So people just got drunk, and splash water along the road which cause a lot of accident during Pi Mai each year.

I imagine that people are just having fun, but some times we can overdo a good thing. Keo told me once that she had a friend that got hit full in the face by a water balloon filled with red dye. That would ruin my day.

Happy Lao New Year Everyone!

Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 10th Apr, 2011 at 10:35pm
William, That's right. Last year, a pregnant woman was just sitting in the park, and she got hit in her stomach by a water bomb by a passing car. She's crazy to be out and about when she knows that people will throwing water left, right and centre. They probably didn't mean to throw it towards her, but it hit her hard and it hurt her too.

Larp Dip, If you're caught in the crossfire, you will doused like everyone else. Strangers are allowed to wet each other during the Lao New Year. If you don't want to get wet in Laos, not a problem, stay indoors for a few days.

Title: Re: Happy Lao New Year (April 14-16)
Post by Larb Dip on 10th Apr, 2011 at 10:56pm
Stay inside? No way! Not me seaw. I'll be out there in the warzone - aptly attired, tanktop and all - with everyone else having a good time! A few buckets would come in handy too.

How about you seaw? Do you join in with the waterfights?

I'll count that as a "Pi Mai" festivity.

Very true and especially in Texas (southernmost state in the US besides Florida) because it gets extremely hot and humid in the Lone Star State.  I would say 1/3 of all homes in Texas have swimming pools.

Pool parties are probably an American culture. Sometimes you watch movies and you see a pool party.

It probably started back in the olden days. I know that stars like Judy Garland like to celebrate a birthday pool party.

How do you distinguish the 'innocent' from the promiscuous?

When I say: 'Lets go. Lets go. To the hotel. Lets go.'.
How do I prevent myself from walking into a slap?

What are the tells?

How do I know who's working and who's not?

I mean: 'working' as sohpeni/mae jang/pusao har ngeun/galee.

How do I know if she is a prostitute or not?

How can you tell just by looking at them? I have noticed that even some of the 'innocent' girls are starting to wear clothes that have been tailored with cleavage in mind.

The last thing I want to do is approach a prospect only to find that she is 'innocent'. That would be embarrassing for both parties.

In NZ homes don't really need to come equiped with pools let alone the inflatable versions. Over here, especially in Auckland, we are blessed to be surrounded by the sea. Everywhere you go there's a beach. NZ is reknowed for it's outdoor activities. Kayaking, abseiling, rock climbing, bungy jumping, snorkelling for paua etc. are all part of the Kiwi culture. In the summer months you really need to slip-slop-and-slap on that sunscreen. The ozone layer above NZ is quite crappity smacked. The suns harmful UV rays radiate through a gaping hole.

There's a Rugby World Cup happening later on in the year too. That would be the ideal time for anyone who wants to try out NZ. The country will be pumping - Auckland in particular. :)

Lets talk about reincarnation shall we? We might as well since you don't want to talk about 'US' anymore:

How is reincarnation viewed in Laos?
What EXACTLY does 'reincarnation' mean in Laos?
I heard the superstitions. I just want to be clear on this intriguing issue.

I know what 'reincarnation' means, in a nut shell.
I meant, how deep is this beleif in Laos? I already know YOU are a believer. How about the general poulation?
How do you say reincarnation in Laos by the way? I also asked you to translate some Lao words into English for me before. Why didn't you? That's what you're here for right? To help out with all things Lao, right?

Are you staring into that computer of yours EVERY day?

Well, I haven't gone around asking everyone what they believe in, but most Lao elders seem to have a belief in reincarnation. I've translated everything that has been asked, maybe I missed it.

Just say "Gert mah mai" will do for "reincarnation".

Yes, I stare into the computer every day, and sometimes watch a Judy Garland movie or two on TV.

That's too easy. Anybody with a basic command of Lao can improptu that automatically. ;D
I thought 'reincarnation' had a proper Pali/Sanskrit equivalent.

It's a lot of movies for someone who only lived to 47, and she also did other things such as performing in concerts and hosting a TV show. She was very beautiful and talented, someone that I've held in high regard since I was a schoolgirl.

Yes, a relative from overseas sent me some of her DVD movies, but I purchased most of them online over the years.

There are many opportunities ahead for you to be in Laos. The Lao New Year is celebrated every year, and it's always the same.

Except in modern times, people are out on the streets with beer bottles, standing on boxes like lunatics and dancing like strippers in public. The older generation told me that before I was born, the celebration was nothing like this in Vientiane, and Laos in general.

Are you hinting at an invitation nang? I ACCEPT!!! :)

"Except in modern times, people are out on the streets with beer bottles, standing on boxes like lunatics and dancing like strippers in public." This is called having fun baby. :-* Obviously you're not the party type.

"The older generation told me that before I was born, the celebration was nothing like this in Vientiane, and Laos in general." I just want to touch on that real quickly here. Is it true that back in our parents' generation (I'm only you 'older brother' by a year or two, right) that everybody used to go to sleep as soon as the sun set? There were no such venues to linger after dusk. Man have times changed. My old lady got a bit of a culture shock the first time she went back to Laos. 'This isn't the Laos we left behind', she would say. ;D

Well, this isn't my preferred method of party, that's why I never like to participate during the Lao New Year.

There's certainly no need to tell the whole world "poosai kai tor" or "I'm a guy selling my body", like the message the gentleman is holding up.

Looks very fun and wish I was there too.  Everything shut down for 3 days straight?

Lao Democratic, Is it approaching the hot season in Minnesota?

MrLao4ever, Not everything was shut down. Some restaurants and shops were still open, but schools, government offices and many businesses closed to party.

So it's a drunkenfest everywhere for 3 days like Madi Gras in New Orleans?

There's usually not a lot of action in the morning because many partygoers are still drunk, tired and asleep, but come midday water fights continue again into the evening and traffic are regularly at a standstill.

Three days of celebration for many people, and now it's back to business as usual.

Are all the 'pubao' photographed lady boys? There fit the bill.

Is that guy who's advertising himself for sale SERIOUS? :'(

We don't have ladyboys in Laos. Gay people still dress like a man. The guys in the pictures don't look gay.

I don't know if he is serious or not, some people like to joke around during the Lao New Year festivities.

Yes, it's un-funny, if it's meant to be a joke. It's a pity that he couldn't come up with something else.

Maybe my sense of humour leaves something to be desired at times.

When I was young and my mom would be talking about something that happened before I was born and I would ask, "How old was I?" or "Where was I then?"

She would say, "Son, you weren't even a twinkle in your father's eye."

That always confused me more because I was too young to know what she was talking about.

;D
