Some of us did that in the bad old days but we don't do it any more since we now have a better understanding of Laos. In the past, the only people who used the word derogatorily were those who lived in Bangkok. They believed themselves the center of the universe and anything deviated from their standards was considered rustic or uncivilized. It was part of their ancient politics where racism was employed to uphold their ethnic unity and supremacy. They have all the derogatory words to address foreigners and ethnic minorities and even the Thais who live in remoter areas. It is never used negatively by the Thais elsewhere. We don't do it any more these days even in Bangkok after all the campaigns and education at schools. The Thais who still use the word derogatorily are only a bunch of idiots who are uneducated and are probably racist to all our neighboring countries. Most Thai people today love Laos and we always enjoy our trips to Vientienne, Luang Phrabang and beyond. The number of Thai tourists to Laos far exceeds the number of tourists of any nationality. If the majority of us do not like Laos or Lao people, why is it that so many of us prefer to cross the border to spend our vacations there and come back with so many positive reports and impressions. I always teach the young ones to respect Laos and all our neighbors. If you happen to find those retarded Thais who never learn to keep up with the reality and shut up, my advice is either to slap them right away or just ignore them as idiots. They are stupid and they won't be able to do much but talk shit. By the way, I'm Thai from Thailand and I plan to visit Laos very soon. I found your topic as I was trying to search for information for my future trip to Laos.

Is 'eco-tourism' part of your plan as well?

Isn't Tai different than Thai? I thought Tai was like...the mountain tribes near the Vietnamese border or something...

I am not an expert, but I believe that the Tai people are found in the mountains. In China, there's a minority people called the "Dai." I think they are the same too.

In the older days, Thai idiotic behaviours against Lao people were probably related to the economic and freedom disadvantages that Lao people had relative to  that of Thai people.

Not gonna happen!

You know us Lao, we all got our own cliques. Whenever you go to a Lao party, it's always the same people! Every time!

How can our people 'unite' when we gossip about each others' affairs and spread malicious rumours that do nothing but lower our self esteems?

Then there are also the 'staunch' Lao - those unknown to us - who are REAL stubborn and won't even look in your direction - let alone introduce themselves - when crossing paths. To do so might seem like one is 'sucking up', which is akin to begging for money. If they're not in our 'clique', then let them be. How can we unite with this type of upbringing and prejudice?

By the way, Lan Xang glory days are long gone. Issan have already moved on. I think it's time Laos got over it too.

I'm still here every day, even though I am not active.

This time of year is very busy for me, but come the next few months when the rainy season ends and the festivals begin, I'll post more exclusive pictures, especially Boun That Luang.

Yes you will, won't you; albeit just leaving the 'good' parts. Anyway, I just detoured from those 'sites and couldn't spot any improvements. So, what are you guys doing?

When are you going to post new content on here Saovaluck?

Why are Lao people so optimistic towards these people? You guys all sound shocked over our mistreatment by the hands of these creatures, as if this oppression is a new phenomenon. This discrimination has been going on for centuries. This ain't nothing new here, pinong! :D

Lao people, time to wake up and show the world that you are people who deserve respect. If we don't make noise and stand up for our rights, we will continue to be look down upon and taken advantage of.

Hello, i am a falang and each time i go to BKK i use my modest lao language skills (i do not speak thai and do not want to). Most of the time the loso of BKK are from Isan or Lao : the bus drivers, traders on the market, the maids at the GH... They have been always very surprised (amused) that a white guy can speak their language. As a result i did not have to endure the usual tourist traps; even better : the fair price and good discounts, advices about cheap but nice place where to stay...
The Thais from BKK consider the Isan as "rednecks" and by extension lao too.
Ask someone from Paris what is thinking about the people from the provinces! All around the world, people from the capital are arrogant and most of them chose to forget that they are also from the provinces. In short terms being part of the capital is being among the elite, it is what they think.
Another example : i used to study in Austin (Texas, USA); each time i went to the university restaurant i was speaking to the staff in Spanish : few kind words (hello, how r u doing today...) as a result a got a better served portion than the Americans! What about people from VTE? When they use the ban nok term to speak about the people from outside the city is it kind, just normal or derogatory? What do you think?

It sounds like our patriotic bro has a Luang Prabang accent? Am I right about that?

You ears must be in tune to all Lao accents and dialects, right, seaw? You probably know which part of Laos one hails from just by listening to their speech?

Definately northern Lao accent but not Luang Prabang. Most likely Xieng Kuang accent.
