Title: Salary for the cast in The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Post by Admin Saovaluck on 2nd Nov, 2011 at 4:10pm

The Wizard of Oz beauty, Judy Garland was "the most adorable creature that was ever put on this earth and so right for the part of Dorothy" in the words of her Oz co-star Ray Bolger, who starred as the Scarecrow.

Interestingly, Judy Garland was paid $500 US per week, which was a lot of money in those days, however she earned the lowest salary for a major role, while Ray Bolger earned $3,000 US per week which was a whopping six times more than Miss Garland.

Below is the salary per week for each main cast in The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Cast Salary per week
Ray Bolger (the Scarecrow) $3,000
Jack Haley (the Tin Man) $3,000
Bert Lahr (the Cowardly Lion) $2,500
Frank Morgan (the Wizard) $2,500
Margaret Hamilton (the Wicked Witch of the West)    $1,000
Billie Burke (Glinda the Good Witch of the North) $766
Charley Grapewin (Uncle Henry) $750
Clara Blandick (Auntie Em) $750
Judy Garland (Dorothy) $500
Terry (Toto the brindle Cairn Terrier) $125
Each midget (the Munchkins) $50

The witch deserves nothing after what Dorothy had to endure. The payout system was unfair in those days for child actors and actresses.

They paid Toto too, but in reality they paid Toto's owner who probably used the money to treat him to a well-deserved life like an animal King.

I was thinking of toilets.

Usa = best
Europe= ok
Canada = ok
Mexico = worse than ok
Brazil = worse to ok
Venezuela = worse than worse to ok

Most capitalistic nation = USA = best toilets!

MGM no longer exists, and now Warner Bros. owns the rights to The Wizard of Oz so they profit from the movie.

Now they are altering the movie to IMAX, Blu-ray 3D releases which should bring in some good profit.

Oh wow, Toto made more the then the poor midgets per week.
Trivia time: Who was supposed to play Nick Cropper-
The Tin Man, and had to be replaced. Bonus: Why did they have to replace him?

The Munchkins played a lesser role than Toto, who had more screen time, so there's no surprises there. What's surprising, perhaps, is Judy Garland played the main role as Dorothy but she earned much less than others.

I guess you mean "Nick Chopper."

To answer your trivia question, Ray Bolger was meant to play the Tin Woodsman but he wanted to play the role of the Scarecrow. Then they chose Buddy Ebsen but he had health issues in the early stages of production and he couldn't go on. At the end of the day, they brought in Jack Haley on loan from Twentieth Century Fox.

Here it is from wikepedia:

Budget
$2,777,000

Box office
$3,017,000 (original release)

$14,661,431 (unadjusted)

(re-releases)
$239,190,498 (adjusted 2012)

Approximately 16 times profitable over the budget to make the movie so far.  The Oz Movie is still making MGM richer from movie sales and other royalty fees used in plays and etc....
