The Wizard of Oz bombshell, Judy Garland had only one thought in her mind as a youngster and that was to be a singer-actress.

When she was a young girl, she did everything she could from achieving her ultimate dream by singing with her sisters, then appearing in five short films for screen tests in the hope that the biggest studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) would offer her a contract. Her lucky break came as a 13 year old teenager in 1935.

As a new comer to the studio, she needed to compete with another teenager named "Deanna Durbin". The girls appeared together in Every Sunday (1936) and MGM decided that Judy Garland was the better of the two. MGM made Judy Garland their number one priority, while Deanna Durbin was discarded and she signed with another studio, Universal Studios.

Judy Garland performed in some great movies during her early days at MGM, but The Wizard of Oz (1939) was the movie that made her become a worldwide sensation. After her unforgettable performance as Dorothy, no film became impossible when it features Judy Garland. In fact her name alone "Judy Garland" was all that MGM needed to green light a film. She was that good, people just wanted to see her in any movie.
