Title: Judy Garland was a city girl
Post by Admin Saovaluck on 25th Dec, 2011 at 9:05am
The Wizard of Oz beauty, Judy Garland was a city girl. She was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and she spent the majority of her life living in Los Angeles, California, where she worked for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios.

Her portrayal of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz turned her into a country farm girl in Kansas, and travelling through the forest in Oz. The sceneries that are very different to her real life functioning of city life. But her simple living character matched her "girl next door" image in the real world.

Somewhere out there on that horizon
Out beyond the neon lights
I know there must be somethin' better
but there's nowhere else in sight
It's survival in the city
When you live from day to day
City streets don't have much pity
When you're down, that's where you'll stay
In the city, oh, oh.
In the city.....

Judy Garland spent two days in Grand Rapids, Minnesota in early April, 1938 for a promotional tour of her movie, Everybody Sing (1938).

She also went to see the house where she used to live which would have brought back memories. This was the last time she would ever be in Grand Rapids.

I was born here in the city
With my back against the wall
Nothing grows, and life ain't very pretty
No one's there to catch you when you fall
Somewhere out on that horizon
Faraway from the neon sky
I know there must be somethin' better
And I can't stay another night
In the city, oh, oh.
In the city
