I don't know, but it's difficult to trust jewellery online. It's better to pop into a store.

He probably doesn't live in Laos so that's why he wants to try buying it online instead of popping into a store like the dalat sao mall.
Ebay?

Buy it on his next visit to Laos.

Isn't jewellery in Western countries better quality than in Laos though? That's what most Laotians in Laos and overseas think anyway.

I've been to Laos and seen many of the jewelers in the Talat Sao market. The workmanship for the gold that they sell isn't comparable to what you'd see in some other places in Asia like Bangkok, Singapore or Hong Kong. On the other hand, some of the silver work is outstanding.

Yeah, I don't know about the quality of the design or art of the jewelry in the dalat sao market but the gold from Laos is supposed to be more pure, meaning it is less refined and perhaps this is the reason some people think it is not of good quality as what you would see in most jewelry stores around the world. I personally don't like yellow gold. I like platinum or white gold, but I don't wear jewelry, not even a watch. I always feel ripped off when buying jewelry, never know what you're really getting. I guess if she's happy and your broke, then that's all that matters.

Gold from overseas is always in demand in Laos. Bring your gold from America or Canada or Australia or France and the jewellers in Laos would buy it from you in a heartbeat.

Why would you get ripped off in America, don't they have a price tag? In Laos, there's no price tag so you really know how much the item is worth. They can say any price that suits them.

At least you can bargain in Laos. Over here, they just jack up the price and you have to take it or leave it.
It is very easy to get ripped off over here because it is hard to tell what's real and what's fake. There are many imitations and 18k might not really be 18k of gold. There are so many different prices and places selling it that you don't know how to choose. Buying diamonds is even harder cause the price is heavily dependent upon the quality which we can't even see. Cut, clarity, color, karats, etc... certified by gemologist are usually a safer bet but even then, there are many gemologist certifications and they are not equal by any standards.
That's why to me I said as long as the girl you're giving it to is happy, she don't need to know where or how it came from, or even the price tag. I've researched this stuff in the past for ex-gf's, never again.
Gold in Laos is very soft compared to here, I think in Laos it's about 22k vs our 18k standard. Usually that's the highest gold content 18k cause they add other metals into it to make it stronger so it doesn't fall off when you wear it. Gold is heavy and I wouldn't like to wear it like a chain around my neck. I guess I'm used to living like a monk and not wearing any jewelry.

I was wondering why you would want to buy Laos gold, is there a special reason?

There are jewellery stores in Western countries that specialises in selling pure gold jewellery, you just have to know where to find them. Normal shopping centres like malls only have the 18k standard. I have a pure gold necklace but it wasn't purchased in Laos. My relative from overseas got it for me, and you can sometimes bargain with expensive jewellery.

I prefer to see the price of an item with my own eyes than asking the jeweller how much is this, and how much is that all the time. I want to decide whether to take it or leave it without the interruption of the seller. Also, in Western countries they provide details of how many carat is in your gold and diamond. In Laos, they just put the items in their glass showcase with no information and no price.

That's why it's easier for jewellers in Laos to rip you off because there is no base price for you to work with. They can call a higher price if you're a foreigner, or they think you have a lot of money.

Not if they are small chains.

Most guys don't like wearing jewellery, but it is a necessity for women.

The jewelry and gemstone shops in Vientiane have a wide selection of beautiful gemstones (sapphires, rubies, etc.) mined in Laos.  I'd like to own some of those but am dubious about their authenticity since I have seen online complaints by people who bought fake gemstones in Vientiane.

I'm toying with the idea of finding out where gemstones are mined and going there to negotiate direct purchases of the gems.

oh you were talking about the gold... can't tell what karat it is. Now the others, I'll have to give them a squeeze test and let you know if they are real...
