Title: Screen goddess Judy Garland is happy with her new MGM contract
Post by Admin Saovaluck on 7th May, 2013 at 12:45pm
Screen goddess Judy Garland is happy with her new MGM contract that was filed on Superior Court in September, 1940. (For contracts, Judy was considered a minor until she turned twenty one on June 10, 1943).

The new contract called for an immediate raise from $600 to $2,000 per week (Monday through Saturday), with options over seven years to bring her up to $3,000 per week. Thus, for seven years with at least forty weeks of work each year.

MGM was willing to guarantee Judy a total salary of $680,000 for each of those seven years. (There would be another new contract in 1946).

So did Dorothy get the $680,000/year contract for 7 years?  That was lotsa cash back then.

Yes, Judy Garland earned a lot of money, and that kind of money is still a lot today for the average person. Unfortunately she still struggled financially for most of her life.

Judy Garland was a movie star and she needed to depend on others to deal with her finances. People she trusted used her, and most of her money went into the pockets of others than her own.

$680,000.00 in 1945 had the same buying power as $8,771,274.16 in 2013.  With the annual inflations of 3.83% over this period.

Wow that is lotsa of dough.  Top actors and actresses probably make $30,000,000 to be in one movie today.

Including tax? 30,000,000 in one movie?

$30,000,000 - $1,500,000 (5% agent fee) = $28,500,000

$28,500,000 - $11,860,000 (39.6% effective tax) = $17,214,000 (final check to take home).

She deserved every penny that she earned, if not more considering that she endured gruelling workloads.

The studio also gave her a car in 1940 as a present for her 18th birthday, so they treated her well, it's just that they controlled her diet too much.

What brand and model of vehicle did Dorothy get?

It's a 1940 Studebaker Champion 2 door Coupe, a very nice car in those days. Below is a rare picture of Judy Garland posing with her new car at Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios backlot.

I bet she never drove Studebaker! ::)

She knew how to drive and probably drove it a bit, but she was a passenger in cars for most of her life.

I wonder where is Dorothy's Studebaker now ::)?  I bet it's worth of alot of dough since this Studebaker is a true classic car and also had been touched by Dorothy.

Probably left to rot in a junkyard, or used as scrap metal a long time ago.

Hey now...pessimism in not allowed in Laopride ;D.  I am sure someone somewhere is owning Dorothy's 1949 Studebaker Champion.  America is crazy about materialisms and a materialism with Dorothy's signature is a bonus :D.

She received the Studebaker Champion as a present in 1940, so it's well over 70 years ago and I don't think it has survived. The car probably changed ownership many times, and they may not realise that it was once owned by Judy Garland.

The materials belonging to Judy Garland still exist today because they were found stored away within the film studio system. Anything outside the studio is hard to recover.

What is the VIN (vehicle identification number) of Dorothy's Studebaker? You know?

A Vehicle Identification Number was first used in 1954.

Judy Garland's car was a 1940 model.

Wow I did not know that the VIN values representing vehicles was initiated in 1954.  Hmm..this would be more challenging to track her down.

No, I don't have the talent as the original Dorothy so I can't be the same person who reincarnated.

I already gave you an account of what happened to her Studebaker Champion. It has rotted away in a junkyard or used as spare parts well before we were born.

Whether or not you believe it is another matter. Please do, keep searching for it.

In USA, Judys belongings merit more?

I think Judy Garland's possessions in the United States have more value.

She considered England as her second home in her later life, but she didn't really have anything there.

Very true the USA is a nation comprised of only consumers.  We do not have money but we just keep printing those damned money so we can buy more products without any consequences :laugh2 :laugh2 :laugh2 :laugh2.
