You always read that it is illegal for a non Laotian man to have sex with a Laotian woman.  Doesn't matter whether its pay or girlfriend.

What actually happens if you get caught?

How diligent are they enforcing it?  Is it just wink wink nudge nudge or are they really out to get you?

I read that there are some obvious places where people meet and leave for physical pleasure.  Surely the police know about these places.

A Laotian friend told me that it is no problem, but he hasn't lived there for some time.

Does anybody actually know of a situation where someone was caught?

According to the law in Laos (if one choose to take it seriously), it is illegal for a foreigner to stay in the same room with a Lao woman overnight if you can't prove that the both of you are married.

I've heard of a foreigner in Vientiane get fined as much as $5,000 many years ago, but I haven't heard of anyone being sent to jail as a result of sleeping or staying with a Lao woman.

You can do it at your own peril. Generally, the authorities are not out to get you but you just never know. Sometimes a local tuk tuk driver might not like you, or he thinks you have money just because you're a foreigner, and he might lead the police to your room to get his share of the dividend.

Situations like this are examples where you have to be alert in a corrupt society as Laos.

Yes you are correct.Its only that of my personal opinion
I have a friend who is an academic advisor at a university.She see alot of student coming from China and India .I'm pretty sure other places too.My point is that
the school here let people think and open their minds to
everything including science and politics.I"m not in anyway
bashing China. You know that plane that just crash in San Francisco ? Majority of those kids that was on that flight were Chinese.They paid around $5000 us dollar just to a summer class in the university here.That my friends say alot . If you wanna join the communist party I'm pretty sure
there are good school for them . ;)

If I had a choice in university, I would choose the one offering open science and politics and teaching how to crack others wallets.  :laugh1

Generally speaking, it is illegal to be alone with a Lao woman in a room for sexual activities anytime, day or night but night time is more dangerous because that's when the police can come knocking on your door to do checks.

Usually they don't check during the day time because you are allowed to have a friend visit your room, and you could argue that she is your friend.

The bottom line is "Non-marital sexual relationships between Lao citizens and foreigners are not permitted under Lao law" and I disagree with this ridiculous law. Go out and find murderers and thieves, and leave the good people alone the way they want to live their lives.

Oh getting married just to be together as first love not good
idea.I realize that nobody can see what the future hold,but

I used to work with a guy 13 years ago and he dated like 60 plus girlfriends over the course of his life time.  By now he probably been with 100 womans, LOL.  I don't think he will get marry any time soon, LOL.

Actually I think it's dumb to waste 30 K a year on a university in the States when you can go to a good Uni in China for 3k! The Chinese kids that go abroad are often the ones that couldn't hack the Gaokao in China. Higher ed. is all about the bucks now.  :'(

Most chinese young studying in USA are smart. Gao Kao is a f...king system. I still get nightmare about it. I took it 24 years ago.  :(
