They took her home and everything she had, poor girl. Sometimes when I think about it, tears fill my eyes.

She owed $4 million in tax debt, which is around $21 million these days. Anyone in that situation would be stressed, I know I would be, if I was a big star and I was left homeless.

If there was one person in this world I would waive tax debts, it would be Judy Garland. She was an exceptional person, and deserves exceptional circumstances.

I know what is America. Normally people need to live in hard working for a quality life. You will be more difficult to keep the quality life than in Asia. I know some Asian who lives in America, and they earn over US$7000 p/m, but they don't have much spare money to buy expensive stuff, because of the tax...

Something you have to / must know

I'm an Asian, I don't like that, Some Asian in America should stop saying they're poor, they should know it (high tax payment and costly living) before immigrating to America.

When you say you're an Asian, what ethnic background do you belong to in specific?

Tax is high.

Another thing is Judy Garland was a singer-actress and that's what she lived to do.

All these financial matters is not something she knew much about, and she depended on others to deal with them for her. People associated with her made a lot of profit without her knowledge.

She could have sue her 'manager' and/or 'accountant'.  Unless she has no paper trails then she got nothing against them.

Pre tax...$7000/per month
Post tax,post insurance,post 401K... .~$5000/per month

$5000/per month disposable income is a lot of money to be spent on needs and wants.

Folks living in the USA pay relatively lower taxes than the rest of 1st world nations.  50% or more of folks salarise in Canada and European United nations (because of Socialism mentality) are taxed.  So if you are living in the USA, you are very lucky to have more money to spend on whatever your heart desires.

I born in Hong Kong, but my parents not.
You see, tax thing does not affect us a lot.
Therefore, people would ignore the tax thing.
For example, people outside US wouldn't know they have to pay 40%tax for lottery winning. If people never hit that situation then people never know it. What the shame...
As your point said we are just the resident in the city, so lot of thing or situation we will never know, but poor Judy Garland got it.... :(

I'm not a resident of USA, but Australia at the moment.
Tax in Australia depends on income level and occupation. Like the mining worker (miner) pays 45% (rising higher), officer with high income pays approximate 30%. In HK you just pay almost nothing.

HK is more corrupt than Laos then if you are not paying taxes to the system. :D

All civilized and 1st world countries pay taxes to certain degree to keep the country running (education/schools, roads, national defense and so on...).

I am an urban planner, whether high or low tax system gives challenges to city development. Just like Microsoft and Apple user they never said other is better and they know the issues of their system. However, you live happy/ agree with the system, it is more important than how much money you paid for tax.

Okay you were born there, but my question was your ethnic background, or your race in other words.

Are you a Hong Kong Chinese?

5000 after all going-aways is very nice. We get 5500 after all going aways.

I think HK was never or is not an Asian country, it was a small region and is a special region now.

Judy never been to any Asian country  ;D ;D ;D

But, no Asian country was entertainment oriented that time and had no money for big star.

Okay it's a region but most people living there are Chinese.

Judy Garland toured other countries to sing, and she wouldn't draw crowds in an Asian country.

She may visit to Japan, I remember she attended a show or radio interview in Japan after the wizard of Oz was released (might be a long distance call??).

I'm still young, so I don't know about Judy Garland in the old Hong Kong. I only know most of those Garland's movies in HK were released:

You see, Hong Kong loves Judy Garland (but I don't think many HK people know her now). After the WWII, so many Garland's movies were released in 1947.
