Have just read in the Vientiane Times that the Elephant population in Laos is around 450 and facing extinction through poaching and being worked to death. Is there no protection afforded these animals by the government or perhaps conservation groups.? It surely would be a sad day for Laos if it became known as the land with no Elephants.

Hearing things like this makes me feel so sick. Killing off your own national symbol. When will we people learn? Their habitat is being destroyed to make way for commetcial farms every day. Does no one have mercy for these majestic creatures?

I am sure Laos has a lot of elephants. There will be not accurate statistics for it. Gov wont say its population is going up steadily when money is needed.  Elelphant is the Ace of cards, when let it out, the games finished. Holding it, it will last.  Laos is a poor country, it needs the card.
