Title: Job Fair 2014 to showcase potential career options
Post by Moon on 15th Apr, 2014 at 12:54am
Job Fair 2014 will kick off on April 25-26 at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane, where information on about 200 potential careers will be on offer for job seekers, the organising committee announced yesterday.

More than 100 sectors including companies, enterprises, investment projects, labour recruitment agencies, educational and vocational institutes will participate at the event.

At least 1,000 jobs will be on offer for job hunters, said Mr Phouvanh Chanthavong, Director General of the Skill Development and Employment Department at the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare.

A majority of the in-demand jobs will be in the industrial sector, notably garment factories, according to iJOBs Co. Ltd, a local recruitment agency which organised the event together with the ministry.

The employment-matching event will not only provide an opportunity for employers and job seekers to meet, but also enable employers and vocational and educational institutes to meet and discuss labour demand so that skill training will be in line with industry needs.

“Students who participate in the event will also learn about labour demand and that will help them to decide what subjects they should undertake,” said Mr Phouvanh, who represented the organising committee to give the press conference.

A products fair and exhibition featuring agricultural commodities and locally-made handicrafts will also be displayed during the two-day Job Fair 2014 at the National Convention Centre. Those interested in participating in the fair can call 030 2002000.

Job Fair 2014 features four main objectives, including creating employment opportunities, providing an arena for product/service advertisement, building human resource networking, and raising awareness of the Asean Economic Community's arrival in 2015, according to iJOBs Co. Ltd.

Free-of-charge bus services will be available to the convention centre from Lao-Korea Training Centre in Khamhoung village, Xaythany district near the National University of Laos, Lao-German Technical School, the Polytechnic College and from Pakpasak Technical College.

The fair will add fuel to the government's efforts to create jobs for more than 50,000 people a year.

Laos is currently suffering from a domestic labour shortage that has already seen the country having to bring in foreign workers, notably skilled ones.

At least 31,130 workers will be needed by 2015 to work in nine sectors, according to information reported recently by the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The garment sector will need the largest number of workers at an estimated 9,900, followed by construction with 5,500 workers while the furniture production sector requires around 5,000 additional staff.

To ease the shortage, the National Assembly passed an amendment to the Labour Law in December, allowing more foreign workers to be recruited for positions in Laos.

The law permits a workplace or enterprise to employ unskilled or labour-based foreign workers up to 15 percent of their total workforce, increasing the limit from the previous 10 percent.

In addition, a workplace is also allowed to employ knowledge-based foreign workers in a workplace up to a maximum of 25 percent, an increase from the previous 20 percent.
