Title: Rent a car
Post by Conquer on 17th Jul, 2018 at 7:19pm
I wanted to travel in Laos for 2-3 weeks in rural areas. Is it possible to rent a car and do a self drive? If it is not, then is it possible to rent with a driver? How much would be the cost? In some countries is about 400-500 usd per month. Also is it possible to do ecotourism/home stay in laos in rural areas? I just want to enjoy the nature and see the country I'm not interested in big cities at all. Thanks

You could rent a car or driver in Laos. Some guesthouses offer motorbike and bicycle rental so you could talk to them for a bigger alternative.

The guesthouses may also point you to the right direction because they have contacts, or they know a place where you could hire a car. Some Tuk Tuk/Jumbo drivers in Laos also own a car and they may take customers long distance for the right price.

I don't know much about the rural areas of Laos and what they offer because I'm a city person. Mind you there are no big cities in Laos, we have a few cities but most tourists consider them more as a town.

Ok I found some price for the car. It goes around 40 usd per day or around 1200 usd per month. (in some countries there is classified adds where the car is rented from private people and is much cheaper).
Now I have to do some research where to stay. I guess I can stay in small town and travel daily around the town to see the place as option.

That's good.

I recommend hiring a personal driver/chauffeur service because if anything goes wrong, such as an accident, you don't have to pay for damages or injuries because you're just a passenger. But then the price will be more than $40 per day.

The possible financial liability if there is an accident is should always be taken into account. Also dealing with the police, whom in rural areas, probably speak little English, but know the universal language for a shakedown.
Possibly hire a driver for a week or so, then bus between the small towns. Look for an older driver, family man with kids. He has a reason for a modicum of safety; whereas a young, single driver tends toward a more reckless driving style.

This sound like the best solution. I think I will do that. I will try to find car with driver as I go to the place. And go from there. Thanks. I will focus on finding traveling places and places where I can stay.
