In Judy Garland's time, she was contracted to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studios for over a decade. This meant that she was basically a slave because the studio controlled her life. And it didn't help her either by having a stage-managing mother. Anything Judy did, even what she ate and when to sleep and get back up to work was under the control of her studio. It's a very sad story about The Wizard of Oz superstar, and definitely one that the pressure of being a child star had a negative impact on her.

Movie stars these days have less pressure because they are free agents, in other words they are free to decide with any studio to perform in a movie. They are not contracted to any studio, the only exception is that they are contracted to complete a movie that they are performing in, then they become a free agent once more.
