Nam Ngum Reservoir

I am a Geologist and I am very curious to know if Vientiane's main water supply is from Nam Ngum Reservoir.   The reservoir looks extensive on the map but very shallow?

Yes. Water supply can sometimes be a problem in Vientiane, so it's good to have water tanks as a backup during times of water shortages.

Some homes have water wells, so they receive free underground water.

The Nam Ngum reservoir and hydroelectric plant provides electricity to the city (and Thailand), not water.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up. I've never been interested in where my tap water comes from, as long as I have tap water.

The Mekong river must be the main water supply, and underground for homes with wells. Yes, we are still living in the prehistoric age in Vientiane folks.

Thanks 'Old Man' and 'Administrator' for your knowledge. 
Anything to do with rocks and rock formations, minerals, river systems, reservoirs, surface topgraphy and subsurface features/structures are very interesting to me personally.  I think most of the water in Vientiane comes from several of the smaller reservoirs north of Vientiane or in combinations of underground reservoirs and may not much so from the Mekong River because of the seasonal fluctuations. I agree with you water is water no matter it comes from.

I strongly recommend you visit this discussion I started about the Nam Ngum hydropower dam near Vientiane: 'Earthquakes and Large dams'.  You'll find people with similar interests there.  Maybe you could add some insight to the discussion.

Thanks 'Old Man'.  I will do that.  Very nice family you got there and thanks for showing your family to us Smiley.  Anything to do with rocks I am there.  Where do you get those rocks from? I would assume there are rock distributors in Vientiane.  Would you happen to know if Lao PDR has geologically map the rock outcrops of the entire area of Laos?
