You do have a point there. Restaurants in Laos do tend to put a lot of MSG into the soup which isn't good for your health.

My mum adds chicken stock, which is the better choice.

It makes me laugh when I see some restaurant in Laos that have MSG as part of their "table top" condiments.  As if the msg in the food wasn't enough.

I've never seen MSG on the table, are you sure it's not sugar or salt? 

MSG is always mixed in the soup during boiling. The option to add extra MSG to the food yourself seems strange.
